Default Backlinks/inlinks from your own site? Confused.

This may be a silly question, but firstly how does this work? And secondly, why do links to my homepgae from my product pages not show as inlinks to my site?

I was checking out a competitor and they have 1,000+ inlinks, nearly all of which come from there own site?

Confused?!

Hey Robert20

where did you check the backlinks ?
You can try yahoo site explorer.

1. Choose the URL you want to check
2. Choose the tab "Inlinks"
3. There is the option to choose between:
- from all pages
- except from this domain
- except from this subdomain

If you set up google webmaster tools they will show you more detailed information on the links they have found to your site.
But to be honest they never all show up. I am not sure if others have found this but I find that I get approx 10 to 20% of my back links show up in both yahoo and google webmaster tools.
