Meta description - use to encourage clickthrough rates.

Meta keywords - not really of importance.

If you set up a Meta description it will be picked up by Google and displayed in the Google organic results. If you do not set up one Google will generate its own description from your page content.

As Brian says if you write it correctly people will click through to your site from the Google results.

Meta titles can also add keyword relevance and are another factor seen by a searcher in deciding which website to visit.

META Tags are an important part of every website. They simply define your website by providing useful information. META tags also help categorize your website as well as helping the search engines make better of your website, seen as many search engines have now incorporated reading META tags as part of their indexing formulas. This thread consists of useful information on using META Tags, as well the ones that will become useful for your website.

You should use a Meta Description, a short description of what your website is about, this will make people more likely to visit your site from search engines.

Some of high ranking websites does not provide 'description' & 'keyword' meta tags. They're only rely to other type of meta tags such as the 'title' and 'http-equiv' and also to the contents of their website.

If you're like me, the titles of the books first grab my attention. Then the brief descriptions below the title or on the back of the books lure me into the stories. If I find something inside the books interesting, I buy them. This is how I buy books whenever I go to book stores.

The brief description plays such an important role in enticing readers to further reading, finding out more, or even deciding to buy, and so does the snippet right below the title tag you see on the Search Engines Results Page (SERP).

A well-written, descriptive snippet (Meta description tag) can increase the probability of a Web page being clicked.
