Age is an important facto to increase the PR of Google, Old domain is naturally get more importance than compare to new domain.

Domain age is a VERY IMPORTANT FACTOR!!! Age is trust - look at it this way, if you are on the road and need to ask for directions to make that important appointment in time (think about it for a minute and leave that sat nav and those smart phones out of the mix), who would you ask? A little kid strolling around the corner or some 45yr old guy on his way to church?

As far as i know it depends on whether the old domain has been left doing nothing for a long time. Buying an old domain which has been doing nothing is as bad as a brand new domain in my opinion in terms of SEO.

yes, site age is important for SEO as per "Google sandbox". And Google will check your website age from your server.

I personally think that Age is not important for SEO.

What is important is number of inbound links, quality of your content, and so on.

Comparing 2 websites.

. Website A was created in 2002.
. Website B was created in 2005.

Now most of website B's pages rank better than website A's.

Why?

Because website B has more inbound links and lots of quality content, while website A has a few inbound links and a few quality content.

In conclusion, age doesn't matter.

I know. I know. I can hear you argue that to build lots of great content and inbound links take time.

You're right. It takes time to do so, but age is not important for SEO. :-)

Domain age is quite important for SEO, yet it's just a tiny factor in the big SEO picture along with
- keyword research
- content
- number and quality of backlinks
- flawless site structure
- Google PageRank
- Alexa rank
- number of links on the page.

That said, if you have an old domain - good for you, but still work hard on your content and backlinks.
