Default Unified business communications

I've seen the term "unified communications" used a lot in business discussions. According to Wikipedia:

So it's a way to bring all of your business data, IT, and phone (and presumably email?) together under a single management system.

However, does anyone have any specific examples of it in use? I'm not quite sure whether unified communications is going to be a step too much for my business.

I already use a Cisco desk phone system, but according to these guys, I could upgrade it to unified communications:

There's not much information on what's actually involved, however. Any pointers on what I should expect, please?
