Write articles and publish them on a website? Is that too obvious?

Chris,
Loads of site would be happy to publish your article, like Brian asked, what subject can you write authoritatively on?
You can also research a topic you think people might be interested in, do an excellent write up and offer it to sites that deals with the subject matter, before you know it, you will have you first publication online.

At the end of teh day, you don't get your name out simply by putting it out - you can known for some degree of expertise.

Simply writing articles is not enough either - you have to make a practical demonstration of your skills - being an armchair critic is simply not enough.

For example, there are plenty of people trying to get their website links about by writing articles on SEO. But a lot of the big names in SEO actually rarely ever write articles in the first place.

At the risk of being a prig, I'd have to make the comment that "getting your name out" is useless if it doesn't put cash into your wallet in the short, or at a pinch, medium term.

Writing articles is great - if it drives visitors to your website, where you convert them into paying clients.

IMO, direct response advertising methods are the best way to get started in business. Get money coming in via ads and web copy that get users to act. Then you can think about publicity (i.e. pr) for expanding your reach. But the focus should always be direct response.
