There is another angle-
Use of Anchor text links, boast your ranking. If you write a good article and distribute it around 100 sites, thats 100 potentially helpful links for very little time and effort. Thats my real aim. Clare

 Actually, I'm sure I had a link list for article submissions - quite long. I'll check that out later - remind me if I forget.
