Macs are a heck of a lot more secure than Windows. There are simply less vulnerabilites. Why? Two reasons. They thoroughly test their OS before releasing it, and as such find most/all bugs, and they don't load the computer with things that could be exploited. Windows OSes, on the other hand, have plently of bugs (which have mostly be worked out by now on the older OSes, but I bet there are plenty of bugs on Vista), plently of exploitable built-in components, and their OSes simply aren't tested enough.
Besides, the people at Apple know how to code properly. |

Mac OS was engineered differently. Any outside sources needs authentication within it's core. Meaning, you cant just touch the inner core programming itself.

I think that viruses on Macs are so rare because of the fact that the population of Apple users are mostly professional people, such as graphics artists, movie makers, and other industry-related people. Therefore, because of the fact that the Apple users are professionals, Apple makes excellent care in developing products which are secure and don't get hacked easily.
Windows on the other hand is cheap and all kinds of people use Windows. Because of the fact that you can get more pirated copies of Windows, it is obvious that Windows are more targeted by viruses. |

Actually, hackers generally use a Linux distro. There are more people hacking Windows, but only because it's so easy to do so. Windows is unsecure and comes with some stupid configurations that non-computer savvy users won't know how to turn off.
