Default College = Useless

Yes another semester confirms that college is a complete waste of money. At first, I figured once I got done with all the general education and actually started studying my major, it'd be worth it. But another semester into my Junior year and I am still convinced I am paying way too much money to learn nothing I didn't already know, or couldn't teach myself with a few books, and a piece of paper to hang on the wall. Not to mention all the time I waste sitting in pointless classes listening to Professors ramble about information that anyone with common sense already knows.

Anyway, sorry, I had to vent.

Anyone else here aggree that college is a waste of time and money (other than the fact that it is difficult to get a job without that magical piece of paper that says "I paid thousands of dollars to have this so I could work for you!" aka Diploma)?

I totally agree with you, thank god I'm on to my last year, but man are you right. This year is mostly workplacement, but still you have to pay the jackpot, work for free at some company to gain experience in your major and when you're done with it all and try to look for a job they ask for a minimum of three years of working experience, excluding the experience gained during workplacement....wtf....how can one gain that experience if you don't give them a chance...bleh...and i totally agree with those professors, thinking they know it all, usually not up for a discussion...just sit and listen to what they've got to say...it's about to kick off again overhere next week. When are you starting again?

Andrew, I am studying Marketing. I was studying advertising at another University, but decided to come back to the University I started at which doesn't offer advertising, so I'm majoring in marketing instead.

Frank, I started Monday. I've still got about 3 years left and that's if I take summer school. And this is the start of my 3rd year.

Good luck with job hunting for Marketing. As much as I love marketing and everything that has to do with that, Im going into other parts of Business (still a sophomore so no set major as of yet), because the market for marketing positions isnt very good. Hopefully itll go up soon.

Because of that and my indecision I might be doing a double major. I really want to do Finances but I also love Accounting hehe I pretty much like all Business majors my school offers

Hopefully this year will set me on the right path.
As to the whole college thing.... ehhh I kinda agree but there will always be parties to life ur spirits up! I can barely afford my tuition which really sucks 'cause when I DO get a job, Ill be paying off loans for the rest of my life. CANT WAIT!

hehe...true that...my girlfriend always says the student time was/is the best time when it comes to partying. When you start working full time it seems you have less energy for all the raving & dancing/drinking...

I'm using multimedia design as a gateway course, hopefully, to get into the recording industry. Could serve as a method for extra cash on the side to pay my way through, I'll have to wait and see.

Personally, I think business courses are uselss, if any are. You can only be taught so much. A lot of "Business" like advertising and marketing, at least half is all about expereince and performance. I can't see what there really is to dive into in terms of general marketing or accounting that wouldn't be taught in highschool. I hope they don't spend another semester telling you that the new market style is consumer oriented and you have to seek a need to fulfill before any real large demand will arise.

Lucky for me, my Cousin is co-founder of a marketing agency based out of San Clemente California so once I graduate, I've already got a job. That's really the only thing keeping me in school is knowing that I have a job once I graduate if I want one. However, the way things are going right now, me and my best friend will probably be staying right here in the fastest growing and the #1 city for Start Up's in all of the United States, good ol' Atlanta Georgia.

I'm definitely have no worries about work after college though. *Sigh*

And Derek, Advertising is actually highly under-looked as a major by students but is actually a very high demand high paying specialized industry with lots of different opportunities. It's not as much like marketing as most people think. That's why I wish the school I am currently attending offered an Advertising major.

Oh and Dimitry, it always makes me feel better to hear of other students with student loans!

I agree. I like advertising. I was actually thinking about going into sales and advertising for a while.
But my opinion of it is that it's more practical than text-book. My opinion is that a lot can go into how your project is handled. How you speak to people, etc. You can be taught stuff like "this is watt o look for, don't spit on your hand when you shake theirs" .... but I don't think as much study really goes into business courses like accounting, etc. It seems that you'd be able to pick up whetever you need without having to pay the thousands of dollars for school.

I'm sure, if I did enough searching, I could look up all the acocunting principles I needed to set up my own self suffecient accounting firm out of my basement, had I the desire, through the internet and what I learned in highschool. I think you're paying more for the "experience" like learning what happens if you spit on your hand with these courses, but I don't think the price is worht it, when someone who spend $50 for a highspeed internet connection got acces to the same amount of info as you over the summer.

As a result of that. I was really discouraged from even taking a course in multimedia design. I have good people skills. I actually like getting up and giving presentations now. And I'm not completely lost when it comes to graphic deisgn. I know my way around photoshop, I know more than my way around web development, the only thing I see myseld picking up here would be extra time to learn flash.

Truthfully, though, I'm hoping to apply to a post graduate program in music recoridng arts. It's a tough course to get on its own, and there's a note that a lot of the applicants are post graduates. That and me not giving one shit in highschool and having a bad grade average, I'm hoping i can shine through this, and get accepted next time I apply.

So to the original statement, College = uselss. I completely agree now. In highschool I was so paranoid about not getting in and all that crap, and now, I haven't even started, and I already see alternatives. However, Highschool = uselss is much more of a true statement. Persoally, I almst don't want to go, because I don't feel I've come close to earning it. It's wierd. I watched the Breakfast Club the other day (that movie answer all your questions) and I saw that I was really like the guy Judd Nelson plays, on a lot of levels, and here I am, enroled in college... Makes me think.

Yea Derek we are in the same page. It sounds like you are more of a self-taught learner, like myself. I would much rather learn Marketing by working in a marketing firm as an intern etc. instead of sitting in a classroom for 4 years first and then going on to be an intern.
