US politicians have taken the first steps towards imposing restrictions on Google's Gmail service. Citing privacy worries, Californian senators have approved a bill that limits Google's plans to scan messages and include ads based on what it finds.
Google said it was working with law-makers on a way to both answer privacy concerns and run a viable service. Before becoming law the bill will go to California's Assembly for further discussion and possible amendment. More: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/3756603.stm

Worrying about Google reading what I say has had a tiny impact on what I've sent through my gmail account, but really, email isn't a secure means of communication is it?

I find the whole situation a little strange - if Google is using a bot to spider e-mails, to display relevant ads, then as Google isn't saring that information with third parties, or releasing that information freely to non-secure departments of the company, then I really don't understand the issue. Then again, privacy isn't really so big an issue here in the UK. There's a US/UK listening post called Menwith Hill about 50 miles from me anyway, which is used to hoover up and search through UK telecommunications - including all e-mails. Privacy? Not such an issue.
