Default vps question

I have a vps in the states and it has unlimited bandwidth - is this the same as the UK ie does not matter how many people go onto it ? as i find that it has something called process and i can only have 75 processes at a time which works out as 75 people on the site at one time which is not a lot? What is the difference between these and i suppose i will have to upgrade to have more processes. I only have mysql and php and htm on the site and that is it?

Unlimited bandwidth is not possible. You may be unmetered which will allow you to use up to the maximum capacity of the link or on a large pipe, but you will have a limit.

I guess it would be possible to limit the number of processes a kernel is able to run, but that sort of defeats the point of having a VPS in the 1st place. You may also have a connection limit set in the web server config file which would then limit you to 75 web processes rather than 75 OS processes.

I suggest you read the small print in your contract and see what you have and how you can use it.

well i cant find anything about processes anywhere but when the site kept going down they said it was because i could only have 75 processes / visitors which is silly cos what is the point of having a vps then? single hosting would be better.

As Monaghan has already pointed out - Unlimited bandwidth does not exist and if you are only "allowed" 75 visitors at any one time then it seems like you have been sold a poor package - how much is this VPS costing you out of interest?

If you have a VPS, then by the nature of the VPS you should have full admin rights, so unless the mod is a kernel level mod (generally a kernel recompile needs to be done by the server's administrator and may impact many VPS's on the same box), then you should be able to reconfigure the web server with as many connections as you desire.

$89 / Month.... That's about £45 a month - correct?

You could get a big big slice of a UK server for that without any connections limits. Infact you could probably get a whole (unmanaged) US server.

Is there any reason why you want US hosting over UK hosting - where are you based and where are your target visitors based?
