Sandboxing is basically the inability to rank for high volume traffic keywords, though you can rank for strings of lesser traffic keywords relating to them.

Basically, any new domain should presume itself sandboxed for the first 12-18months, which means it's not advised to push on link development for these major keywords.

After that period, you can go link crazy for the high volume traffic keywords.

Brian
Why should one wait? Would this time not be best taken advantage of and creating in bound links with those search terms? Or have I commited a feux pa?
Is there a way of checking for sandboxing?
e.g. 'building materials'
search on MSN.co.uk and my site comes up in the number one spot.
Yahoo.co.uk and I'm in the 95th spot (I'm not very well indexed here).
Google it and I'm nowhere to be found.

However if you search for any building material calculators on any of the search engines and I'll be there near the top.

Is this the sandbox effect or is msn so different?

Appreciate your thoughts.

Google has 10 times the marketshare in the UK of MSN & Yahoo! combined, at around 80% of the UK search market.

So, I'd say pay attention to what Google thinks more than MSN.

Although many people might be a little bit upset about Google sandbox effect, but this truly has created a nice balance on the web, that is, only the true webmasters who love their websites are going to win the war, since they already have the patience to wait and work on their web pages.

If such system wouldn't be in place, so many new websites, with really bad ways of adding hundreds of links overnight would be at the top of all search terms.
