Well I think you should use Blogspot.com which is free and run by Google. So if you have Gmail, than no need to signup. It also helpfull because of easy Adsense setup.

It could be done from your hosting control panel - file manager.

There is one option to what Brian suggests. Go to the hosting control panel, then Fantastico (or the place from where WordPress has been installed). Remove both installation of WP that you curently have (there should be a link for this purpose, next to each instalation). Then just make a new WordPress installation, but this time do not enter nothing in the field "installation directory" or "directory". If you do not specify installation directory, the blog should be placed in your root dir. If the control panel automatically put some value for installation directory, then try to delete it or specify "/" in the field.

The root folder is the public_html folder you upload files to - what you've done is upload the Wordpress folder containing the Wordpress files, but all you actually needed to do was upload the files, not the Wordpress folder itself.

Do you need someone to manage this for you, or do you want to push on with the learning curve?

Nope - to update Wordpress you need to re-upload all of the updated files back up to your server.

If you go to your admin panel, ie, domain.com/wp-admin/ that should tell if there's a latest release in the headlines, and your version number will show at the footer.

I've tried a few and Wordpress wins hands down for the ease of use (less than 1 hour to learn most of the functionality) and flexibility. There are loads of plugins and they literally take minutes to install.
