Question Keyword question

I have a general question which always seems to baffle me.

I optimize a page and introduce my selected keyword phrase, but it has 2 seperate results. For example, I want to use "a bit of this and that".
I see that:
"bit of this" has 100 searches
"bit of that" has 100 searches

There are no results for the full "a bit of this and that".

Therefore does my page not carry quite as much weight if I keep the 2 phrases together as my keyword phrase. Would I be better sticking to "a bit of this" say, by rewording my sentence so that only "a bit of this" appears throughout the page? But the whole sentence is more meaningful?

Does the single first keyword phrase (or second) carry more weight than the combination of the two? Does equal repetitions of the 2 water things down, bearing in mind I thought it was best to have a few keyword phrases but one main one throughout the page??

Big search engines like Google is smart enough to pick words here and there on your page.

So "a bit of this and that" will also result in "a bit of that" although you don't have the phrase on your page. The problem will come when the visitor searches with quotations.

I think the most important think is how hard the competition is (considering both keywords are related to your business).

If "a bit of this and that" has smaller competition than "a bit of this". I'll choose "a bit of this and that". Which of course include the "a bit of this".

For "a bit of that", I'll assume that it is not the keyword that I really want and just hope that the visitors won't use quotations when searching.
Which will bring my page as the result.

What about "a bit of this and a bit of that" and variations like "a bit of this and some of that" , "some bit and some that" ...
In general, stay close to the ordinary language / expressions people use. Try to guess what one would type in the search field if looking for related to this and that products.
