Interesting question, I asked many people recently the same thing: why Google? Average internet users just reply: everyone uses Google, so we do it too...
However, I think an even more interesting question would be: how did we get to this? How did the term "to google something" come to life? And why?

Personally I prefer LIVE.
It seems to give better results. Google seems to serve more ads and shopping pages than realistic content these days. Now, a google page with a "no shopping" options? that would be nice. |

We may see a difference if Yahoo join forces with MSN

I was a fan of Alta Vista for years and it took a lot of hassling from a friend of mine to try out the new search engine everyone was raving on about at the time, Google. I've hardly been back to AV since, it has a clean crisp interface and gives me what I want on the first page of the SERPs nine times out of ten.
It has become the "Hoover" of the search engines though. People use Hoover as a verb to describe the act of vacuum cleaning whatever manufacturer's appliance they're using. Google is acquiring the same status. Whether this is by accident or a very clever piece of marketing by the peeps at Google I don't know.

I need to move away from Google, however I only remember when I have just left there.
