If it's indexed by Google then how well it's represented on Google.com or Google.co.uk depends on a number of factors.

A big key one is that if your site is a .com, you absolutely need to host it in the UK, otherwise Google will presume it is not a UK site.

Even if you're site is a .co.uk then it generally prefered to host it in the UK.

Overall, hosting your site in the UK and using a .co.uk should help with it's overall position in Google UK and not doing either is common in sites which are aimed at UK audiences but fail to get a presence on Google UK.

Hope that helps.

It is a .com and it is hosted in the uk. It is currently with 1and1.co.uk.

I have .co.uk so I guess I should switch over.

Ah - now there's the rub - 1and1 are a German company that host a lot of their servers in Germany. Don't presume ever that a company marketed in the UK is offering UK goods.

If you're looking for UK hosting, a couple of recommendations would be:

Linux:
TWD Hosting Limited - Business Website Solutions - Home
Clook Internet UK .:. UK based web hosting - UK based web host - Shared hosting, Multiple domain / Reseller packages, Domain Names, Fully Managed Dedicated Servers

Windows:
Monaghan Web Hosting - from Monaghan Consultants Ltd.

Should be able to provide much better support than 1and1 as well.

Brian,

Just a correction on my link, use DIY Hosting - The home of custom web hosting or Monaghan Consultants Ltd, Web Hosting, ADSL, IT & Database Consultancy rather than monaghanwebhosting.com as this is a very out of date site (as my be reflected in the design ). We have Linux & Windows hosting from UK servers.

I'd also like to confirm my findings on moving a .uk to a UK server. I work with a local charity and their web design was not meeting their requirements, so we trashed the original design and put in place a simple site using Joomla and swapped it from a US server to a UK server. We used to get placed around the 10th page on Google.co.uk with a search for the charity name, with a non-seo'd site and just a few very simple pages, we now get on the 1st page

A site that is indexed in almost all SEOs can generate lots of traffic that is why it is important.
