Something I've been doing the past few days is really checking out my error logs carefully (there's an option in Cpanel for this under Web/FTP stats) and it's been really surprising to see where missing files are.
Sometimes robots.txt will show as a missing file, but other times it's images I swore were on the server but must have been misplaced while moving folders. I figure you don't want 404's filling up either visitor browsers or search engine records and that your site should be nice and clean from obvious and correctable errors. Anyone with me on this or am I just O/C? |

You ideally don't want anything to be returning 404. You're not over the top, just doing what not enough people do.
If you have an old page still being returned from a search engine, then consider putting a landing page here directing the visitor to the new location.
