Default Press Release Advice

Here is some advice on preparing a press release from smallbusinessadvice.org.uk

Quote:
A press release should have the heading 'press release', have a strong headline in 18 point - don't try to copy the newspaper's style, the editor will do that; the text should be 1.5 line spaced and be not less than 12 point. Try hard to have something to say, not just an announcement that your business exists. This could be an introductory offer (ensure you increase your price before you discount to ensure you still make a profit! And ensure you time limit it). Keep it short and to the point - no waffle! A picture helps to get published but ensure the caption is clear [and short]. At the end of the release, say so "End".
Add contact details: your name, business name, phone number and email address.

Add a 'Note for Editors' explaining exactly what your company does and, hence, why you are issuing a press release - especially if there is a particular benefit to their readers. Local press will accept either fax or email. Email usually works better with local radio.

To increase the chance of getting published/broadcast, it is a good idea to try to 'warm up' the editor with a phone call/email telling them - briefly - what you are planning, especially if there is a specific time slot you need to hit. If it's local press, it can be worth dropping into their local office. Most of the media look more kindly on press releases if you pay for advertising as well, but don't place one ad; it won't work: drip, drip, drip is the only effective way. Radio can work out expensive but if their profile matches your potential customer, it can be effective.
Hope this helps & best of luck.

I've actually had success simply providing a short little pitch to the editor right before the press release is pasted into the document (email of course this only applies to) and then mass sending to all of the free media outlets. This is how I get most of my publicity for clients and it really seems to work.
