I've edited the above to make the link active - Jason and Aaron are friends of mine, and both write a lot of good sense.

A word of warning about patents, though - Hilltop is simply one of many that Google have filed, and there's no guarantee of Google actually using any of these patents whole - I very much suspect that Google uses little pieces of its various patents and applies them as required.

Ultimately, Google is trying to ensure that only quality content rises up in its index. It's certainly a formative pressure in SEO.

Quality links seem to still be the #1 factor from what I've seen.
