Default Police shoot man on London tube

Earlier reports suggested a suicide bomber stopped, with witnesses reporting the man having a bomb belt and wires sticking out underneath a large coat.

Now it seems that the media is pulling back from such assertions, and simply reporting a man shot after being pursued by police.

Overall, another crazy day in London, it seems:

Bring back bounty hunting!

That'd give the gangs something useful to do, and reduce the terrorism problem as well, not to mention lighten the police workload.

Sometimes I'm amazed at my level of genius.

The police at first said the man shot dead was not one of the 4 suspects we the public are being told about. But he is connected with the attempted attacks. They believe he may have been resident a few hours prior in one of the houses raided earlier today in connection with the attacks.

But the police later were not confirming nor denying if he was one of the suspects. We’ll have to wait until the next news conference probably over the weekend to know the details.

Yep - an oddly vague situation.

Now stating that the shooting was a tragic error:

I'm all for the security services shooting anyone they believe to be about to detonate a bomb, but for gods sake can they be a million % sure it’s the right person. This kind of incident can do so much damage to Britain.

Funny how in the original reports it was an Asian with a bomb belt. Now it's some poor dumb white Brazilian from Sao Paulo, where you don't stop to politely answer gun wielding civilians when they chase you.

Seems that a possible key issue here is plain-clothes security forces not properly identifying themselves before taking pursuit.

It's a point worth making that if the dead man had been wired with explosives, the copper who shot him would be a hero.

But when someone has to make life or death decisions on the spot, the danger of error either way are always going to have larger consequences.
