If there's one thing I can't stand, it's being hit by large HTML file-formatted e-mails.
I normally point most of my domain e-mails to a Hotmail account. Trouble is, at 2 megs it can really fill up easily. Currently I'm running at just over 90% percent capacity, so I'm pretty vulnerable to large e-mails blocking up my inbox. Which is why I'm getting very narked off at supposed webmastering newsletters coming in at 50-100k a piece. Sure, I've blocked them - but it's the principle of being effectively "e-mail bombed" that annoys me. Especially as - consider this - that most of the formating code is taken up with advertising gunk. Couple that with Newsletters in question either telling me nothing at all of any interest, or else something I consider quite wrong (some of the "SEO advice" is absolutely laughable!). And, of course, the product endorsement that no body cares for. Hey, we webmasters surf the web - we see that sort of thing all the time in public - don't bomb us with it in private, huh? Just a quick rant.

I've actually been tempted to purchase extra space on Hotmail. I like the filtering and virus scanning of attachments. The trouble is, Hotmail accounts have a bad reputation, and I've found I've not been able to use them everywhere that I would prefer. It's also held up a couple of online purchases - flagged a potentially fraudulent because it's a free e-mail account.

Brian, you need better hosting where you can download directly from the POP3 box, have spam filtering and filtering from a lot of viruses (and it's quicker to do mail in POP3 than that horrible Hotmail).
Talk to Aaron and if you tell him I sent you, he might not charge a stupid fee... Trev |

You could be quite right, Trev. I've actually not all that much experience with e-mail - it's never been a real issue with myself. As I effectively came to the internet via MSN, I've never got out of the simple habit of relying on Hotmail.
Of course, if you'd like to write up a little tutorial on using POP e-mail, with filtering for spam and viruses, then I'm sure there is more than one place you could post that up.

Sounds like theres a market for a site which solves this problem by putting a taster into the e-mail in plain text, then sending the visitor off to a web page where they can view the newsletter in glorious HTML technicolour.
Erm....maybe like the one I've nearly finished writing. I'd agree though, HTML e-mails are a real pain. Trev |
