Looks like Skype will be getting some competition. Yahoo recently purchased a VoIP company, DialPad. You can use DialPad to call from the US to anywhere in the world for 1.7 cents. This is about what Skype charges for users connecting to the regular telephone system from their PCs. But if you're connecting to another Skyper's PC, there is no charge.
I don't notice any free services for people running DialPad software on their PCs. Therefore, I'm staying with Skype. But who knows? A year from now, things might change again. |

Definitely an interesting market - but I can't help but wonder what actual revenue potential there can be in purchasing a VoIP company - unless perhaps Yahoo! are planning on using the numbers for marketing their products and selling the lists on to telemarketing companies, along with useful profiling data to help make the telemarketing more targeted. Just 2c and random thoughts.
