Default When did you join the internet?

I joined in 2001 - I was very broke and even had to ask my mum to help me pay the basic dial-up ISP set up.

But I thrive on information, and the idea of a thriving network of information become too much - it felt like I was missing out on something big, so finally joined the net in June 2000.

I spent most of that time in MSN communities, generally uncertain of the open waters of the general internet, but the lack of user concern by MSN finally force me to seek better places in the wider seas of the internet.

I didn't put my first website up until 2001, and immediately feel into the trap of thinking hits=visitors. Oh, boy.

Been developing a presence since, and especially posting in communities and building new websites.

Anyway, as a general call, when did people here join the internet? And how did you get used to it as first?

I joined in 1995, with a now-defunct company called Prodigy. I had a 386DX PC with a 120MB hard drive. The dial-up connection was 14.4kbs.

I join via CompuServe in 1996 or 1997 and just like rtoxl I had a 14.4kbs dial up and CompuServe charge you for time spend online, unmettered connection was still years away. Most of my time online was actually spent in CompuServe portal, it took months before I realise that the world wide web is not actually CompuServe portal

Back in college, which woulda been... oooh, about 13 years ago? Something like that. It was mainly just IRC then though, but with a bit of browsing to research projects. I've had websites on and off for about 8 years or something, but only took it up designing sites seriously in the last 5 years.

In 1996 I went to visit my friend Tim who did clever stuff at BT in Suffolk, and he had an Internet connected PC in his little study that was like a window into the world.

In 2000 I got my first real taste of the internet when I got a job with a company that allowed everyone access. I had seen and used it prior to this but to a very limited scale. I soon got hooked and now wonder how I would live without it. I run my business, manage my finances, do most of my shopping and research any information I require on the internet.

I guess I’m getting old. I started with an IBM XT using dial up bulletin boards and the new DOS 3 version before the actual internet had caught on. No hard drive yet just dual floppy drives and a monstrous 8 meg of ram. That was a lot back then. I was soon able to upgrade to a hard card with 10 meg of storage.
