Your rank will improve if what you sell/offer/discuss is clear even before you scroll the page. That's my rule of thumb anyway. Bots like to know where you stand and how confident it is at describing what it is your site is about. Try this test... How easy is it for you to describe your site. The easier it is, the higher your rank. Bots don't really pay attention to the "keywords" or "abstract" anymore (not sure if most ever did) since too many people abuse it. To describe what a client site is about and make it the first thing a search bot will index, I'll usually put a full description of the website in a single paragraph and put it in a hidden <div>. Then I'll stick it underneath <body>. The content of the hidden <div> is blatantly obvious for the bot, since it's not capable of CSS, but it's invisible to the avarage browser. A search for the site name will give that hidden paragraph as the first resposnse. The rest is just maintenance. Search engines don't like stagnant sites. Frequent updates = Frequent revisits. Since even search engines make money on how up-to-date their hits are (a limited form of world news). Search companies can't keep bringing up old news for the same query. e.g. "Berlin" should bring up Gerhard Schroder somewhere in top. Not East/West Germany

Accoona is a dirty word around here - bad forum spamming by the company.
The results just look like slightly modified Yahoo!/Overture results, which is hardly distinguishing. Accoona need to try and rival Google - or else focus on a niche - if they are to be taken seriously.

I don't understand your reasoning behind doing that. Personally, I'd never heard of Acoona before I found this forum and now that I know it exists I can't see any reason why I should switch to using it or spend resources trying to get my clients' websites into a search engine that nobody actually uses.

I am really sorry
. My attention isn't spam anything. I only would like to know about this SE. I can confirm that I am not trying to promote it, in any case. Actually, I would like to know only your comments about it because I have heard about it in a discussion group. That is all. Ina |

I'm not accusing you of spamming. I just don't understand why you would want to spend time and energy on a search engine that isn't used by any significant number of people. Maybe, perhaps from a user persepctive, just to see what it can do and how it works, but I'm not going to be in a hurry to offer optimisation services for an engine that insignificant numbers of people use!

As far as I am aware - if you want your own website to get a better ranking - from Google - you need other independant sites to link to yours - a lot! The problem is that google - ranks your site higher if you have other similar sites linking to you - yet if you are in a competative business - other people in your sector (similar sites) are very reluctant to add you to their links - because you are their competition!! so you seem forced to advertise with google - However, with a small business - especially a start up business with not a lot of capital - advertising on google etc... is out of the question. MSN and Yahoo - seem to focus on content. Most of my sites have a huge (content rich) but hidden front page, which redirects you to the userfriendly homepage - I've also found that adding your site to an already well established site really helps you to be seen by people who use google - for example - a local directory of services etc... It's not a direct way of getting your site at the top of google ratings but it seems to have got my "info" in the first page of google, with a link to my site etc... But because my site(s) don't show up in google very often - I've stopped using out of protest! - BTW - why not check out www.speegle.co.uk it's search engine that actually talks!! amazing! and really useful if you are busy doing something else?!??!?
