Does sex sell ? Hell yes !
Ok, maybe it doesn't lead people to put their hands in their pockets and buy something but, no.....actually it probably DOES lead people to put their hands into their pockets ! But seriously, advertising doesn't always work on a conscious level-it's not a cerebral process. Quite often it is targeting our instincts and what can be more instinctive and primitive than sex ? Have you ever noticed why computer magazines often have scantily clad models on their covers ? It's got absolutely nothing to do with the content it is because statistically magazines sell more copies if there is an attractive face on the cover........this works for both sexes. It doesn't work all the time as sometimes I simply want a computer magazine and don't want to look like I'm buying a porn mag !! |

I think it's the case that overt use of sex doesn't sell - it just gets attention.
Which is a useful tactic when consumers are constantly having their attention vied for. The one place where sex sells is where a lifestyle is being sold - then it's less "sex" as much as "sexy".

Can't help noticing that of all the worthy, intelligent, cutting-edge discussions on this forum, most run out of steam quite quickly, whereas the one with 'sex' in the title runs to 3 pages. QED, I reckon

I know a company "smith brothers", in China it becomes "smith sisters" then China becomes the biggest smith's overseas market.

This must be why all that "I'll paint your website on my breasts" advertising goes for so much money on Ebay.
Sexual imagery attracts the eye. Some ads I see, however, attract the eye so much to the image or innuendo, that you fail to even notice what the product is. |
