Hi Guys,
I'm trying to set up a web-site targeted at people in India & want to get ranked on www.google.co.in, when people do a search 'from the web' & 'pages from india'. Would a .co.in domain name be better or would a .com be better? Thanks in advance guys. |

National TLD's give a strong signal for national search engines - ie, .uk domain for Google UK, so it's certainly worth considering a .in for Indian search.

Thanks for that Brian.
Would a .in domain get me ranked on both a 'web search' & a 'pages from india' search on www.google.co.in then? |

Your website will be ranked on both "web search" and "pages from india", but your SERP will be different.
When your website is indexed by Google you are in the Google search database. "Web search" and "Pages from India" both pull data from the Google search database. Your SERP will most likely be higher from searching within pages from India. I believe you can think of it this way. If you do a search on the entire web, you are competing with every other websites on the Internet. If you do a search (with the same keyword) on only pages from India, you are only competing with websites from India. Less websites, higher SERP generally. Not sure if I'm on the right track. Correct me if I'm wrong, Brian. I'm curious about this as well. |

I'm trying to be a little cautious as normally I advise similar for the UK - UK links also help a .com greatly.
However, because I'm really just limited to Google UK I'm hesitant of trying to extrapolate to conditions I'm not privy to view. It's also a point to note that simply having a .in does not guarantee any ranking presence in Google India - you would still need to promote such a site, especially from Indian websites.

What ever you decide to do then make sure you regionalise the site. So if it's any accountancy firm in Delhi then have Accountant's Delhi in the page title etc, include relevant keywords, address details, and build up a strong local link profile.
