Default RSS Feed use

I guess this goes in this section?

I'm looking at RSS feeds and have some questions if anybody has worked with them. Largely use and monetization questions.

1. Can the RSS feed be used for ads, directly, in any way? Or is it just an entry to your site?

2. Can they be tracked? Can you know who or how many are subscribing to your feeds?

3. Are there advantages or disadvantages with "third party" feeds.

For instance, Wordpress has a widget that if clicked leads to a page that allows your feed to be added to email or Yahoo or MSN or about a jillion other readers or receptors of RSS.

This page: http://www.addtoany.com/

Good thing? Bad thing? Is there a better way to do it yourself?

(I didn't like the way the widget took people away from my site, so I just linked directly to that page with a TARGET link)

Making RSS feeds easy to use is a positive user experience, but frankly I would caution against making much income from it - the people who traditionally click ads are too stupid to recognise them as ads - and people who use RSS feeds are generally among the more intelligent web users.

I looove RSS. Got into using my blog feeds recently and it's great. really easy way to generate traffic. I suppose it depends on the quality of your sites. There are feeds sites that allow you to generate RSS revenue from your feeds but most don't

RSS Feed directories to consider Has a list of the feeds directories I use. Well at least some of them

Can someone please post a simple breakdown of what an RSS feed actually is? And what is the benefit of an RSS feed from an SEO point of view?

Thanks.

Just read it. Thanks for this. I now know what a RSS feed is.

I didn't realise how good it can actually be from an SEO point of view.

My next question is, are RSS feeds just for blogs or also for web-sites as well?

Blog usually have RSS feeds built in - Wordpress, Typad, Blogger, and similar usually have them available. So setting them up isn't usually a problem, as they are already in built, and it's just a question of clicking a few buttons to get the settings you want - though you could leave well alone and it would still run smoothly.

Like Brian said most blogging platforms have an inbuilt RSS feed generator. With traditional websites, you may have to generate your feeds yourself. I know it is time consuming but it is well worth the effort. Like with RSS feeds, I submit my website feeds to the feeds directories. Great for traffic

What interests me is more like Feedburner and Yahoo pipes... mashups and such.

WordPress has a plugin called "add any" that's WAY better than just letting people figure out how to get your feed.

But I'd like so find out more about more directive, industrial-strength broadcasting abilities. I can't figure out what the hell Feedburner is all about.

Anybody?
