Ok so I'm an attention seeker obsessed with marketing ;-)
Serious here is my situation. I have built a site for a client who has this domain name www.abcdefg.com (for example) She is starting to build some good rank for key terms. She emailed me today saying the leads are struggling to take down her email address (the site only supplies a for to avoid spam) over the phone and she wants an easier to remeber name. She now wants www.abc.com with an email address info@abc.com She would like to brand her business www.abc.com but wants to redirect to www.abcdefg.com My concern is that SERP results will only show 'www.abcdefg.com' results. Is it common practice to have a client friendl rul with all your content on a more complex url? Im relucatnt to chagne everything over to www.abc.com. Any ideas? no need for 301 redirects as there will be only one page on ww.abc.com Thanks |

Yep - Google will look at the target domain, so if domain name abc.com redirects to abcdef.com, then no one will see abc.com and the branding would be worthless.

I agree with Brian Turner.
If she wants ABC branding then the url shouuld be ABC not ABCDEF. You said you wont do a 301? All page rank and link value would divert to ABC from ABCDEF and would be treat as if it it were ABCDEF, age etc. I have just done the same thing with a branding change when the original brand name and URL was to similar to an estblished brand. We were forced to change URl and brand name. The 301 took about 10 days and believe it or not, the new URL ranks higher than the first one. My opinion only |

301s from one domain to another can go smoothly but they can go slowly too. I've had one of each myself, and try to avoid it now. Rankings always come back in time, but the transition can be 3 or 4 months. I've seen posts from people where it took far longer. I gather that the key issue here is 'trust' and the more competitive the market the more trust you need to rank high. Changing your domain can lose you that trust temporarily. Highlights the importance of getting the right domain name the first time.
