I have a linkedin account but have never really used it. As for other social networks I have never used them for business. Although I do like social bookmarking

Social bookmarkeing is a great way for promoting a blog - ChrisS I see you are a member of Blogcatalog - I find it a good way of generating blog traffic

I've noticed Facebook being used far more often. It's no longer just for socialising - networking is on the up!

Facebook pages work well for many (but not all) businesses as an additional form of online marketing and generating visibility and brand awareness.

I keep my networks separated in mainly two kinds: Facebook and online forums.
I only use Facebook for social networking to keep in touch with friends, family and other non-business related social networks. I think a social community as Facebook should remain for social use only and not business purposes.

When it comes to business networking I strictly use online forums. Like Brian mentions earlier in this thread - the audience is usually much better targeted.

I make a big effort of not trying to make these to networks interfere with each other, unless one part from one group has a relevance to the other. I do not like to speak to people about my plans, projects etc., if I find them not to have any relevance to the subjects. This also leaves me with the great options of sorting out my networks very easily - if they do not fit in one group, they will fit in the other.

Not saying it is the correct thing to do, but that is just how I prefer it.

I have joined quite a few and plan to join more.

My business is art-related so I have joined a lot of related networks. These, deviantArt in particular have been relatively successful (in relative terms for a new site) at generating traffic.

So from my limited experience, related social networks to your business, if they exist, are the way to go.

I've heard something about squidoo/ twitter being good, I;ve personally don;t know but my friends reckon they are good places to social network. I ;m unsure about this
