Assuming your market is made up of humans it seems good to write for them first.
If the humans like your content the the search engines will pick this up by the way you track through the content.

Agreed. Successful websites always have a good content and it should be understood very clearly that the very first thing to consider when we do seo is the content. All else will follow.

There should be a good balance of optimizing your site for the users and for the SE 's as well. To focus on just one factor won't really get you any favorable results.

Content should really be given high importance since it's not just useful for your visitors but also favorable to search engines.
