Yeah, I'm aware of the term as a function label.
I just never saw it used in the context of color schemes. Is there some decor component involved?

Not sure about there being a definitive guide (I think it evolved rather than being defined up front), but I found a pretty good article on it here...

Interesting. Some of it seems a little contractictory. (Keep things clean and simple, but use cute icons and little star badges, for instance) I was also a little amused by the idea that having a "central layout", where the info is in a narrow column down the middle is up-to-date and a good idea. You waste space...and the whole thing is based on like "Web 0.5" or something where people all had narrow screens. I'm REALLY glad to see bigger text mentioned. It just blows my mind how tiny so many designers make their navigation and body text.
