I guess you need to determine whether you are using your PC as a business tool or a home computer. If you are working and charging customers (even if you don't yet make a profit), then it's not home use, so you would need the purchased version. Of course your accountant would offset this cost as a business expense.

The commercial version of AVG offers far more than the free version and at such a low cost, I'm surprised that more people don't buy it

What's AVG got that AVG Free doesn't have then Alex? I'm not shy of buying software when it's good, but do admire free versions that compare with leading retail versions from other publishers.

AVG (commercial version) can be used for any PC and has no restriction on commercial use. There is a good summary on the AVG Free Edition product page (http://www.avg.co.uk/uk.product-avg-...s-free-edition).

The AVG engine is the same, however the free edition tends to be less flexible on scheduling and updates, but in a home environment you don't need such frequent definition updates. The commercial version has additional features such as spam filtering, download scanning, firewall and so on.

Man, I just downloaded the AVG upgrade. What a mistake!
I hate upgrades anyway. They generally just mess everything up and I can't remember when anything worked better afterward. I ended up ditching Firefox and going to Opera after the last new version I downloaded there.

The new version of AVG works, but is a pain in the neck. It won't accept data for scheduling updates, so I do them manually and it no longer searches my PC.

I keep swearing I'll never upgrade anything again...but they ended up making it sound threatening. AVG's was like...no more support for this unless you upgrade.

Rats It was fine like it was, dammit.

Lin, I only use AVG (Free) for the basics but I found v8 a great improvement over v7.x

The interface is great and it seems to hang together a lot better than previous versions.

Lin, I presume you don't have the commercial version then? If you did, you could fire off a support request and get the issue resolved

I use AVG for my personal computer because it's free and also works well...
