Default how to work from 2 offices

i want to work from my home office as well as a remote office but not too sure how to setup the hardware.

i have the on-steroids pc with 24" screen, cordless keyboard/mouse, decent printer, etc. (and on the truly upside; a worth-every-cent herman miller aeron chair and wonderful views.)

i want to be able to be flexible as to where i work from.

apart from the inconvenience and associated risks, i don't really want to cart a laptop from place to place; it seems so 90s to physically carry digital files around.

i'm ok with duplicating the required hardware/software, but mostly concerned with keeping all files up to date and in one spot. would also be nice if it could be offsite so backup is handled too.

i'm too small to go the exchange server option. and too technically unmotivated to want to try. has anyone confronted this before?

So basically, you just want to synch two computers that are in different places? Is that right?

You could look into purchasing an extarnal hard drive for about £120. There compact and fit easily into a pocket/briefcase ect. If you do do this you can work directly from the external drive instead of your 'C' drive or a drive mapping to a server. I'd be carefull though and make sure you encrypt it and also back up your files on a (very) regular basis.

Assuming you'll have an internet connection from both places, then you could use rsync to sync the 2 machines. If you don't have both machines on at the same time, then you could look at an Internet filestore and rsync both systems (download at the beginning of the day and upload when leaving the office).

Rsync is an efficient mechanism that syncs changes in files rather than sending complete files and has been in use for many years.

There's a fair few shareware programs that will do remote syncs. Have a search for "remote sync".. just double check before you start using though, 'cos a lot of them are designed for one-way synching (for backup purposes), but there's a number that will allow you to at least manually synch both ways

Why not keep your files on your home PC and access them via VPN (Virtual Private Network).

You can access all your files / folders over the internet as if you were sat at your home PC via a network drive...

someone else mentioned GoToMyPc as a good option. (is that a VPN?)

it seems simple enough and cheap (us20/month). has anyone tried that?

GoToMyPC is simply a remote access option.

If you want a VPN, try OpenVPN, this is free, built on trusted SSL technology and will give you a secured network pipe between the 2 PC's so you can use the normal Windows networking to connect the PC's.

Dear loki
I can help you . But both the computers ( home computer and office compuetr) must be connected in broadband internet line and I can give you the small program which must be installed in each computer separately and get log in and password , after that you can log into either computer wahtever you want .You can go to directly the desktop of the other remote computer
