I wonder just how many people use free email accounts for important things like domains or banking, PayPal and so on? It's quite worrying really just how little the average person actually knows about computer security.

Privacy too. I had an invite for GMail years ago, but I remember going through their privacy policy and thinking "nah.."
On the other hand, I hate webmail. I much prefer a stand-alone email client. Quite apart from the privacy and security side, they load and run a lot faster, rather than waiting for client-server communications every time you want to do something. |

I do use gmail, however I only use it to sign up for "offers" that are likely to spam me, anything critical or containing personal details goes into a proper account that I have control over. I've never actively given out or published my gmail address yet my mailbox is full of spam and it's not as though I have a common name.

I couldn't use them myself - if you have at least 1 domain, you have more than enough room to set up your own emails.
I really can't understand why anyone would use free email provision when there's no service contract to keep them - when instead you could have full control over them yourself. 2c.
