Not keen on the beers/lagers in all fairness, much prefer to stick to spirits and a mixer or just neat spirits. Cider's my long drink of choice at the moment though, but only the heavily marketed stuff like Bulmers/Magners.

Out of curiosity how do you guys feel about the governments solution to binge drinking, the rise in cost of beer and spirits?

Doesn't solve anything by putting up the cost, you just buy it cheaper from somewhere else. Many years ago when I was a smoker, the budget didn't reduce what I smoked, it just made it more expensive and more tempting to buy duty free. We used to get non-smoking friends to bring back their maximum allowance when they went on holiday.
All that will happen if you up the cost of drink is that pubs will close as people buy in duty free or supermarket discounted. If they could ban happy hour or discount lager from the supermarket, then maybe cost would come into play, but then again so many kids have far more money than they know what to do with these days, they'd just expect more pocket money to pay for the beer.

As mentioned earlier in the thread, I'm a real ale drinker so I've been riding my luck with cheap beer for years and couldn't complain if the price went up a bit

Cheers!
I think raising the price is the wrong way to challenge binge drinking. Raise the age to 21, add a fine if needed! My personal taste is real ale, I partly follow CAMRA. I used to drink lager and only drink it if there is no choice. My favourites are Late Red, Harveys. Bottled - Whitstable Bay, Speckled Hen, Badgers, Innis and Gun and some others. As for smoking I used to smoke up to 15 a day, and cut down to about 1 or 2 a week, I might pinch one off someone. I recently saw a vending machine at £6.80 for 16!!! Just off for a beer now! Cheers!!

I'd rather drink nothing than lager

I don't mind Fosters or Bud. I heard they are trying to revive English Lager, I never heard of it before?
