Default Major server fart

Ok, Platinax was down for over 3 hours this morning. Not good. Will start putting plans in place to get moved to a different server.

Not chuffed.

That was quite a smelly guff, too. I was just about to email you Brian but hit F5 again and all was back. Best of luck with the new hosting. Let me know if you need any recommendations.

The server is with Clook, which are normally a great company.

However, the 3 hour wait aside, the post I made in the server support section of their forum was removed, but only after one of the staff replied claiming that it was back up after only a short delay. Not good.

The server has been farting periodically since I had it - normally only for short bursts - and sometimes because of something I'd cocked up with on mod_rewrite.

But I'm happy difficulty justifying the cost now, and so will starting migrating sites off into my reseller plans.

Oh, boy, another small server fart. Time to fire up something at Liquidweb ready.

Only trouble is, I've hit my credit card limit with RBS again and nothing larger than tens has been able to get processed for the past week - another reason I'm moving to the Bank of Scotland (no real credit card limit).

Will purchase a domain for server hostname purposes, if it will process, then place my order with Liquid Web tomorrow.

Do Liquidweb offer UK hosting?

No, but they have very reliable server hosting. Used to host Platinax and Threadwatch there, before moving to a UK server.

Now I'll set up a range of my larger .uk's there. Am going to rebrand at least one .com as a .co.uk though - a big board in SFF I run, and actually a major reason for moving to the UK. It needs a full server, whereas every other site I run is fine with reseller hosting. Just a shame the big board earns pants!

I'm considering a VPS over the reseller account I've got at the moment as it will let me be a lot more flexible with a few of the things I want to do, but I'm just not sure who to go with.

1&1's "Business" VPS is only £30/month but I'm wary about going for a large host for fear of being just another number.

Are you after plain server or a managed solution?

I'm not certain, but I think the 1&1 servers are in Germany, you may want to double check this.

Well managed in that I want someone there when I balls it up, but I'm happy to make a lot of changes myself.

Now you've mentioned it, I think 1&1 are in Germany...
