1&1 servers are usually based in Germany. Their support also sucks big time - don;t think the support staff know what a website is, let alone a server.
![]() Also now looking at poundhost.com and 49pence.com as additional server hosting options - though for sites not too worried about reliability, as at those prices, despite positive reviews on the contrary, I see an element of risk.

I used to use 49pence back in the days when Ed Butler used to run it from his spare bedroom. They eventually lost any faith as a hosting company and I wouldn't choose the new company due to the bad taste firmly in my mouth.
Their service was such a joke, the 49resellers.co.uk forum was born from it as a place for like minded customers to have a rant. I also use the 4D servers a fair bit but they too seemed to have been suffering of late, with problems with email servers, DB servers, etc. |

I've got a server with Poundhost and also have 11U of space there full of customer kit, no problems with basic server support.
The thing you won't get cheap though from anyone is having someone who can log in and resolve issues. Most server rentals will only offer you support in the event of a hardware failure or provide a simple reboot (if you believe what you read, then a lot of company's idea of a reboot is to power cycle the box ), often in the event of an issue a re-load is offered - be careful to read the small print as you might not actually get what you think you want.Having someone who is prepared to log in and look at your setup and fix a broken box is more of a specialist requirement, the bigger players are only really interested in rebooting servers and restarting failed services as this is usually all's required in order to get the bargain bucket cPanel customer back into service. If you need an on-call sysadmin, shout

Generally, the problems I've had in the past have been down to limitations with control panels and having to contact support to make changes to the server directly.
What I'm hoping is that with my own VPS, I'd be able to remotely access the server directly, then smack it about myself, still using the control panel to do day to day tasks. |

That's fun - just got the set-up email for the server from Liquidweb this morning - only there seems to be an network issue and haven't been able to properly connect for a few hours. Oh, what joy!
