Default Best Free Directories

I spent most of yesterday searching out directories to submit my sites to.

I worked from lists of directories, and have now narrowed down a list of the best free ones to submit to, based primarily on their usefulness for SEO purposes.

All those that use a redirected link (ie, jump.php?your-link) are out, as are those directories that do not even have their content pages spidered (I judged that on the basis of them having pages cached by Google or not).

All of the following with therefore list your link, for free, and leave your link to be spidered as a backlink by search engines.

Here's the list:

DMOZ: http://www.dmoz.org

Yahoo: http://www.yahoo.com

Zeal (non-commerical only) : http://www.zeal.com

Exact Seek: http://www.exactseek.com

Jayde: http://www.jayde.com

TurnPike: http://www.turnpike.net/directory.phtml

Josh.nu: http://www.Josh.nu

JoeAnt: http://www.JoeAnt.com

Gimpsy: http://www.Gimpsy.com

websavvy: http://www.websavvy.cc

Xoron: http://www.xoron.com

FFA: http://www.ffanet.com

411: http://www.411.com

Web World: http://www.webworldindex.com

buzzle: http://www.buzzle.com

The Directory Site: http://www.thedirectorysite.com

Family Friendly Sites: http://www.familyfriendlysites.com/

World Wide Wub: http://www.worldwidewub.org

Genius Find: http://www.geniusfind.com

Quango: http://www.qango.com

Well, Jayde have already sent me an e-mail, stating that business-talk.co.uk is now listed with them. I couldn't find it, though, and the log-in didn;t work - maybe just a case of waiting for everything to update. Either way, pretty quick.

I *am* under the impression that a Jayde listing means automatic subscription to at least one regular newsletter - webproworld? Small price to pay, I guess.

I should also add an URL to this rather excellent resource:

I understand your reasoning for this but is it entirely valid? Afterall, if Google offered you a link from their homepage but with no PR value being passed (unlikely, I know), you wouldn't pass up on the opportunity (I assume).

The reasoning is more specifically because of the SEO value in terms of trying to combat the Florida ranking system: theoretically, directory pages could be classed as "expert pages". The list above is specifically to address that issue. Maybe I should be clearer on that?

As part of a general marketing drive, though, submitting to free directories that are otherwise not indexed will likely have its benefits. I should probably draw up a second list of other free directories, for this purpose.

Actually, the article referenced on the Internet Marketing presentation thread makes a good case for traffic coming from other sites, rather than search engines. I'll definitely have to look at building up some different directory lists.

Hi Brian

When you come to doing that, produce an alphabetical list now, won't you...

LOL! I nearly set up "Aardvark SEO" for precisely that reason.

And while I remember - skaffe.com is another that allows you to post your own link, once you become an editor - just like JoeAnt.
