Default How did you learn you way into webdesign?

Simply out of curiosity - how did people here find their way into webdesign?

Was it part of a general Art then Design background - or were you pretty clueless about design and graphics before you went online, and simply picked it up from there?

Started with a design background, didn't have a clue about websites. I can't even really remember how I got involved in websites, but I think it was just after college. A few friends were doing sites, but it didn't really interest me for ages. Most websites around at the time were pretty basic, there wasn't really anything that caught my imagination. I think that changed for me when I started playing around by using different programs to make the sites, like using Bryce to render 3D buttons, adding sounds etc. Although a lot of what I came out with was impractical (in bandwidth terms), it did make me realise the potential of web design, and thats when I got hooked. Most of what I learnt on the technical side was through experimenting by myself, or from tutorials online.

Started out in Fine art but once i got a computer i was hooked. I loved playing with the technology and using it for 'arty' stuff so it was a natural learning curve of a few years that brought me to my first job as a junior/only designer in a web firm. Within 2 months i was senior and setting up the design section of the company.
I wasn't trying for web design and still don't but it is a natural fit for me that i excel at. When i get bored a bit with the area i have enough going on in other design areas to keep the excitement going.

I learned my way into it by constant trial and error, looking at great design around me and reading every design mag going.

Hi Alan, and welcome to Platinax.

I know lots of artists - graphics designers, even - and yet none of them do any work on the internet. It's a little strange, really.

Technology side of the brain does not always play well with the arty side

Thanks for the welcome.
